Every birder has their bucket list.
Maybe it’s catching a glimpse of a California Condor soaring overhead, or an Atlantic Puffin along the coast. Maybe it’s a visit to the Everglades, or getting lost in Cave Creek Canyon in Arizona.
You’re going to want to add these top locations to your list:
Everglades National Park, Florida:
The Everglades are home to more than just gators. Wading birds also call this world famous wetland ecosystem home. For egrets, ibis, roseate spoonbills and much more, make your way to the Everglades.
Cape May, New Jersey:
From hawks, to warblers to shorebirds, there’s not much you can’t find along the southern tip of New Jersey. Visit between September and October for raptor migration, or May and early June for shorebirds.
Tucson, Arizona:
The area around Tucson is home to species that can’t be found anywhere else in the country! From Saguaro National Park to the Chiricahua Mountains, this is a community birders flock to (especially for hummingbirds!).
Harlingen, Texas:
Homeplace of the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival during the fall’s migration season, you’ll see a combination of breeding birds making their way back south, and occasional species from Central America and Mexico, with birds that can’t be spotted anywhere else in the country (think the green jays and the chachalaca).
Coastal Maine:
Go for some of the country’s best bird watching (and grab some lobster while you’re there). At least 338 bird species are known to dwell Acadia National Park, including colonies of Atlantic puffin that nest just offshore, bald eagles, and even the occasional peregrine falcon.
Northeastern Minnesota:
Picture this -- a quiet, early morning paddle across a woodland lake, with loon calls echoing in the background. This can be your reality in Northeastern Minnesota, a go-to spot for boreal species. If you can brave the cold, winter is an especially rewarding time to see the rare great gray owl or smaller northern hawk owl. In May and June, you can also spot songbirds like the Connecticut Warbler.
