It’s no secret that engineering continues to be a male dominated field. But slowly, this is changing, and more and more women are choosing to study and pursue the field.

Today, we celebrate some of these trailblazers who are paving the way for the next generation of girls.

Emily Warren Roebling:

You may have heard about the Brooklyn Bridge, but we bet you haven’t heard about the woman behind it. Even though she never held a degree in engineering, that didn’t stop her from leaving her mark! She’s one of the most famous women in engineering of her time, and played a role in the famous bridge so many of us have seen (in life or on the big screen).

Ellen Ochoa:

Ellen Ochoa is an American engineer and former astronaut. In 1993, she became the first Hispanic woman to go to space, serving aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.

In 2013, she was appointed the Director of the Johnson Space Centre, becoming the first Hispanic and second female director of the Centre.

Her career has shown that women and girls belong everywhere: in engineering, in leadership positions, and even in space.

Beatrix Shilling:

Beatrix Shilling was as fearless as she was brilliant. She was the fastest female racecar driver of her time, and also helped revolutionize World War II airplane engines!

Katharine Burr Blodgett:

This renowned inventor made major contributions to molecular engineering through her work with monomolecular coatings.

She was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in physics from Cambridge University.

Her contributions advanced lens technology, revolutionizing everything from the glasses you wear, to the microscopes and cameras you use.

Hedy Lamarr:

While the name might be familiar, it likely isn’t one you associate with engineering. This Austrian-born actress was also an accomplished inventor.

Lamarr helped develop an early technique for spread spectrum communications, still valuable in the wireless communications we use today.
