Stands and Bases
The microscope stand is much more than just a platform to place your scope on while you’re using it. It’s true these stands are integral to the operation of a good scope by providing a stable environment to place a stereo microscope, but many stands feature integrated illumination, specimen holders, clear glass stage plates, coarse/fine focus blocks, and graduated scales etched into the base for easy measurement. All of these features are meant to make the business of using your scope easier, more convenient, and make it easier to analyze whatever you’re viewing through the scope.
There are several general microscope stand designs. Many of these make use of a large, sturdy base, designed to rest on a table or desk, with a single pole or arm for mounting your microscope. Most of these mounting points are static, though some may pivot as much as 30 degrees. Other designs with more versatility include the boom or arm stand, where the scope is mounted to an articulated arm. These models often make use of a table clamp instead of using a solid base in order to provide a secure grip.
