Gemological Microscopes
Usually used by jewelers, gemologists, and stone setters, gemological microscopes are specifically designed for use in the industry to observe and evaluate different types and grades of precious stones. Often just called gem microscopes for short, these gemological microscopes are often more advanced than a typical stereo microscope in that they make use of high levels of zoom magnification and sometimes even a digital camera to reveal the most intricate details of a gemstone to ensure no possible flaws are overlooked.
Many of these gem scopes have additional specific capabilities to provide the best viewing conditions. Many scopes have a set of tweezers integrated into their stage to help with securing and positioning gemstones, and it’s often standard that gemological microscopes come equipped with a secondary light for direct viewing that shines down on the sample from above. This supplements the traditional underlit stage, providing better visibility and coverage for gemstones under observation. This bottom light source often also has an iris and darkfield condenser as well, which makes it easier for light to illuminate the interior of a gem in an effort to help spot cracks, occlusions, or any other kinds of imperfections. This helps a gemologist to set the overall grade (and price) of the precious stone.
